Synopsis:
Tomcat Findus needs a new bed. “The old one has grown too small,” Pettson says, but Findus protests: “No, I have grown so big!” From now on, the cat wants to be known only as “big fellow” and to be allowed to decide things for himself sometimes. And he wants to do dangerous things, like pulling a huge fish out of the water without Pettson's help, for example, or spending the night alone in a tent. Neither of those works out all that well, but still Findus cannot be persuaded otherwise: he is a big boy now and he knows his own mind.

When Pettson builds Findus a new bed, the tomcat practices hopping on it in the evenings and early in the mornings – as high as possible and as loudly as possible! Lacking sleep, Pettson decides to make a hopping house for his little whirlwind in the old latrine. It's wonderful in there, so wonderful that tomcat Findus doesn't want to leave ever again. He has his dinner in the outhouse, and even sleeps there, too. “When little ones grow up, things change,” says their neighbour Beda. But that's no consolation for poor old Pettson!
