Director Veit Helmer found inspiration for his first children’s film in the fact that for many years, the Society for Research in Consumer Goods (Gesellschaft fu?r Konsumgu?terforschung) has been testing innovative products in Hassloch in der Pfalz, which is rated as the most average of German towns demographically speaking.

In Bollersdorf, too, the local adults are very proud that their town is the most normal in the country and everyone there is considered an “average German citizen”! and they are certainly very glad that Bollersdorf has been selected to test all sorts of new goods. only the children are fed up with always having to play the guinea pig. They want to put an end to these goings on in their village and – to stop being so average – to create a new world record. But their parents manage to cross them again and again. When the adults even go so far as to stick all their grans and grandads into an old people’s home for the sake of statistics, Rieke, Lene, Paul, Suse, Ben and Max, and his big sister come up with a plan. They put the adults out of action using sleeping pills and get to work on the craziest of inventions. But these fail one after another, causing absolute chaos in Bollersdorf. The only chance of help comes from the grans and grandads, who are quite happy for their part to escape the tedium of life in an old people’s home!

The Younger Jury said of Fiddlesticks: ‘We loved how funny it was. It was well acted, and easy to follow
