Synopsis:
The kingdom where John III rules is a powerful and happy land because there is a valuable object in the King's treasure chamber - a magic purse. This magic purse can conjure up any amount of gold ducats if one whispers the right magic formula to it. So begins the fairy-tale story of what can happen when wisdom and love come up against stupidity, greed and spitefulness. This treasure is stolen by the mighty witch Irrfriede, but Irrfriede has a handicap; she has forgotten how to cast spells. She tries all kinds of disguises to tease the secret magic formula out of the King. The King is not the only one filled with utmost consternation when the purse is stolen, for this means that his daughter is now an impoverished princess and will have real problems finding a prince for a husband. After Irrfriede is found guilty of the theft, it is decided that the King's daughter should marry a foreign prince, something that she is not at all happy about. Wealth and happiness look as if they will rule each other out ... but, finally, there is an amazing happy end. (German Cinema)
