Karla's World
Original title: Karlas Kabale
German title: Karlas Welt
Denmark, 2007
Director: Bostrup, Charlotte Sachs
Production company: Nordisk Film
Age recommendation: 8 years and up
Synopsis:
Christmas is just around the corner and while ten-year-old Karla is looking forward to the holiday, she is also a little bit sad. She wishes she could spend Christmas Eve with both of her parents, but they are divorced. She is supposed to celebrate one night with her Dad and the other with her Mom, but things don't turn out as planned.
The holiday gets off to a bad start when, instead of baking cookies with Karla as promised, her mother spends the day in bed with a headache and blames Karla for the mess made by her rambunctious younger bothers. Meanwhile, her father, a recovering alcoholic, has begun drinking again and cancels his celebrations altogether. Feeling cursed with the worst family ever, Karla decides to run away from home and enjoy Christmas elsewhere. But with night falling and the weather getting colder, will she find a safe place to spend the holiday?
Comments:
"Karla's World features great performances and a wonderful script that balances compelling drama with lighter and funnier moments. Charlotte Sachs Bostrup's assured direction takes us inside Karla's world as she struggles to come to terms with adult inconsistencies and learns to appreciate a family that, while not perfect, still has many positive and loving qualities."
