One-Way Ticket to Mombasa
Original title: Menolippu Mombasa
Finland, 2002
Director: Tuomainen, Hannu
Production company: Cinemaker Oy, Helsinki,
Age recommendation: 14 years and up
Synopsis:
17-year-old Pete, a talented amateur guitarist in a school band, falls unconscious at a gig. The doctor gives him little hope of reaching his 18th birthday. In hospital, he shares a room with Jusa, a master of black humour who was brought up in a children's home. One night the two lads, high on vodka in celebration of Jusa's 18th birthday, decide to take a night-time holiday and fulfil their hidden dreams. More than anything else Jusa dreams of seeing the hot beaches and seductive girls of Mombasa before he dies. Pete wants to see Kata, the girl of his dreams from school, and tell her of his love. With tickets to Mombasa in Jusa's pocket, the boys make their way through Finland towards Lapland, where Kata has a summer job. When they get there, Pete declares his love to Kata, but doesn't tell her of his illness. As the departure date for the trip to Mombasa approaches, Pete is torn between his love for Kata and his promise to go to Mombasa with Jusa. Kata decides to accompany the two of them on their way south. The fulfilment of Jusa's dream draws nearer. (Source: Nordic Filmdays Luebeck 2002)
