Let’s celebrate the Zlín Film Festival (May 29th – June 6th 2020) for the 60th time! Visitors can expect a spectacular celebration with a number of extraordinary surprises. This 60th edition will be celebrated in the spirit of the theme ‘2020: BACK TO THE FUTURE’.
“This is an important year,” says Executive Director Jarmila Záhorová. “The celebration will start with the grand Opening Night for the public and we are preparing a big children’s party.” There will be an exhibition of crowd photographs from past editions, a virtual gallery mapping the festival’s history, a festival time machine, etc. The festival will be commemorated in a documentary by Czech Television.
The festival dramaturgy this year will focus the theme ‘2020: Back to the Future’. This section aims to broaden the visitors’ horizons regarding science and technology. Films will be complemented by lectures, trying to answer the question of how technology can make our lives easier. “’Back’ represents a respectable history of the festival, while ‘the future’ promises to fulfil the vision of its modern form developed through science, technology and education” according to Festival President Čestmír Vančura.
In 2020 we also commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of American filmmaker Ray Harryhausen, one of the most renowned pioneers of cinematic tricks. He created unique puppets for films such as CLASH OF THE TITANS and JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS and thus inspired directors like Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, George Lucas and Tim Burton. The Magic of Film Tricks mini-section consists of films, revolutionary in terms of visual effects, such as METROPOLIS, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, JURASSIC PARK and THE MATRIX. All screenings will be introduced by experts in the field.
The ‘Back to the Future’ theme has also inspired the festival’s visual image, combining the monkey head (tradition for the Zlin Festival) with a robot head, thus creating a new graphic element: the “Robo-monkey”, who will be ready to welcome, again, countless guests to the oldest and biggest children’s film festival of its kind.
