The European Audiovisual Observatory (EAO) published a new study titled “Made in Europe – Theatrical Distribution of European Films Across the Globe 2014-2023”, authored by Manuel Fioroni.
Over the past decade, European films have seen a steady increase in circulation, with over 3,300 titles being distributed internationally in 2023. However, this growth has been primarily concentrated within Europe, as most European films perform best in their country of origin, representing 68% of admissions in 2023. European films continue to struggle in penetrating non-European or global markets effectively.
Animation and family films have emerged as leaders in terms of international appeal. In terms of export admissions, animation accounted for half of the top ten European films in 2023, including the top two positions. French films stand out as a dominant force in European cinema, excelling in production (representing 20% of European films), exports, and global admissions (accounting for 33% of total admissions to European films). France’s dominance highlights the importance of strong national support systems and the ability to create films with broad international appeal.
