Cinekid opens its 33rd edition on 16th October with director Frederike Migom’s feature debut BINTI. In this cheerful Flemish/Dutch co-production, the energetic young vlogger Binti, who illegally lives in Belgium with her refugee father, has to go into hiding at 11 year old nature lover Elias’s house.
Cinekid has been involved with BINTI since the very origin of the project. Migom’s scenario was developed when participating in the Cinekid Script LAB and producers Bulletproof Cupid and Family Affair Films met during the Junior Co-production Market. “Cinekid feels like coming home. That we now open the festival, after part of the film was developed here, is a wonderful gift” says director Frederike Migom. BINTI is also in line with the message of this year’s Cinekid edition. “We couldn’t wish for a better ambassador for the ‘Hello World – present yourself’ theme,” says Erik Tijman, Head of Film & Television at Cinekid.
Cinekid presents no less than 14 films in competition. Besides familiar titles such as PSYCHOBITCH (Martin Lund, Norway) and THE BEARS’ FAMOUS INVASION OF SICILY (Lorenzo Mattotti, France & Italy), you can look forward to the mind-boggling A COLONY (Geneviève Dulude-De Celles, Canada), DOUBLE TROUBLE AND THE MAGICAL MIRROR (Marcus Rosenmüller, Germany), LANE 4 (Emiliano Cunha, Brasil) or RUNNING TO THE SKY (Mirlan Abdykalykov, Kyrgyzstan).
Furthermore there is the renowned Cinekid Media Lab, the 12 projects selected for the Cinekid Script LAB and 25 projects on the Junior Co-production Market. Nienke Poelsma, Head of Cinekid for Professionals: “In 2019, 10 out of the 17 participating writers are women! We can’t wait to work with all these professionals”- find the complete list here).
