In the “Honouring the Greats” ceremony at the Zlin Film Festival, two striking personalities from the children’s film sector were rewarded for their years of inspiration and were welcomed to a minutes-long standing ovation. Not only do Jo-Anne Blouin and Felix Vanginderhuysen stand for a long career in young audience cinema and an outspoken opinion and knowledge of all facets of this industry, but each in their own way (through CIFEJ and ECFA, respectively) was instrumental in the cradle of the strong international cooperation that characterises this sector.
Jo-Anne Blouin is the founder and longtime director of Montreal’s FIFEM festival, and an advocate for independent children’s film production in North America. As a founder of Jekino (Belgium) and co-founder of ECFA, Felix Vanginderhuysen played a crucial role in linking European initiatives and developing international cooperation. In the latest ECFA Journal, they both looked back on their careers. After a flood of accolades from their “compagnons de route” via video testimonials, they both addressed the audience, talking about the role of festivals, the building of a worldwide children’s film culture, and especially the international support and camaraderie they had experienced in the process. A wave of emotions flooded the stage, leaving the laureates with a lump in their throats. There is no doubt that both figures enjoy a warm affection and appreciation from the crowd for their approach and tone.
With the Honouring the Greats Awards, the Zlin Film Festival provided an emotional highlight of the current festival season. Zlin Film Festival: “Both honorees are among the most prominent figures who have shaped the shape of children’s film on the international scene, and their work has influenced generations of young viewers. They both share a deep belief that children deserve original and quality filmmaking, and their careers exemplify long-term vision, international dialogue, and a genuine passion.”
