Kids’ programme at International Women’s Film Festival

The Int’l Women’s Film Festival Dortmund + Cologne presents a programme for children and young people in both German cities every year, through continuous cooperation with schools and day-care centres. The young audience is constantly encouraged to critically interpret, understand, and enjoy films. This year’s programme focuses heavily on documentaries with young protagonists who do not allow themselves to be forced into particular roles.

Young people seek orientation in a complex world and grow with their challenges, in documentaries such as…

– GRIP (Laura De Baudringhien, Belgium), about Emilia, who takes part in an adventure camp, a year after fleeing Ukraine. The outdoor adventures make Emilia confront her fears and grow beyond herself.

– THE EMPTY GRAVE (by Agnes Lisa Wegner & Cece Mlay, Germany / Tanzania), dealing with the topic of German colonial rule in Tanzania. The robbery of the remains of their ancestors still causes deep pain for the Bnano and Kayaa families today.

– MY SEXTORTION DIARY (by Patricia Franquesa, Spain) (Photo), addressing issues of digital violence, shame and self-empowerment. Pati finds out that a hacker is sending nude pictures of her to people in her address book, and tries to blackmail her. Pati realises that thousands of others around the world are being blackmailed in the same way.

Jule Murmann, curator of the young audience programme: “These films stand for openness towards other ways of life, for cohesion and mutual support, for the courage to be different and for not accepting grievances.

From 1-6 April, the Int’l Women’s Film Festival is offering a selection of 21 films from 13 countries (including two silent films) for film fans from nursery to senior school, and… for an ECFA Jury, presenting for the 6th time, ECFA’s Best Short.
