How Can Film Criticism Grow Up With Its Audience?

On Saturday 14 February 2026, ECFA invites you to contribute your thoughts on the current challenges of writing about young audience cinema. Publicists from various media backgrounds will have a panel discussion on how youth-oriented films are addressed from a film critic’s perspective.

Last year, an initial attempt was made to spark debate on how (and if) to write about films for younger audiences in a panel, co-organised by ECFA during the Berlinale. This discussion will now be continued, in partnership with the German Film Critics Association (VdFk), FIPRESCI, and the Berlin Critics’ Week, and will feature several international voices, like Gudrun Sommer (ECFA Board /DOXS RUHR, DE), Ahmed Shawky (FIPRESCI President, EG), and Axel Timo Purr, host of the event (VdFk/artechock.de, DE).

The panel discussion takes place from 13:45 – 15:15 in the Thuringian State Representation in Berlin, Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße 64, and should contribute to the public debate on the representation of youth culture (free entry).
