Synopsis:
A tiny hamlet of four houses somewhere in Apulia insouthern Italy in the summer of 1978. Out here, there is nothing but cornfields within a radius of 50 kilometres, stretching out towards the horizon as far as the eye can see. Up above, the sun beats down from a sky of continous, brillant blue. It's the hottest summer of the century. Nothing stirs here, the oly sound to be heared is that of the crickets.

The few adults that live in this desolate place have retreated inside their houses to escape the murderous heat. The only ones who dare to venture outside are the hamlet's six children, who tear around the place on their bicycles. Life's excruciatingly dull here and an adventure certainly wouldn't go amiss.

An adventure occurs - but it is much too dangerous than they could ever have imagined. In the midst of the golden shimmering corn fields, hidden from view, a terrible crime is committed. When nine-year-old Michele comes accross it by chance, his discovery has quite unexpected consequences. Unable to talk to anyone about what he has found, he is left to fend for himself.

Based on a novel by Niccoló Ammaniti - one of the "cannibali", Italian proponents of a new genre of pulp literature- Gabriele Salvatores has created a compelling thriller, which also describes the painful process of growing up. (IFB 2003)
