Chatroom

Original title: Chatroom
German title: Chatroom
Great Britain, 2009

Director: Nakata, Hideo
Production company: Ruby Films
Age recommendation: 15 years and up

Synopsis:
Jim, Eva, Emily and Mo meet William online in a chat room, where they chat about each others’ problems. They are seduced by William’s charisma, but William is not the person he pretends to be. Jim is vulnerable, and he has no idea how dangerous his new friendship with William is. Fantasy collides with reality, when William and Jim meet face to face in the middle of rush hour in the metro. Without the protection of the online universe, everything suddenly becomes very serious. ‘Chatroom’ has a highly unique, theatrical, surreal, almost David Lynchean atmosphere, where all the rooms change together with the characters, their alter egos, discussions and actions, in order to demonstrate their intimate internet reality.

Comments:
Hideo Nakata’s psychological thriller is a sophisticated youth film based on Enda Walsh’s play, and was one of the most talked-about films in Cannes this year.
