Father, mother and the children are just about to leave for their holiday destination in France when the telephone rings. It is the doctor. He does not have good news. Grandpa is seriously ill and doesn’t have long to live. The vacation goes up in smoke and it is suddenly as if everything is topsyturvy. Grandpa pretends there is nothing wrong. Mother Tine is angry with him for doing so, but doesn’t have any luck in talking to him about it. Teenage daughter Anouk is in puberty and has other things on her mind at last she wants to get it on with a boy and has learnt a number of very special French sentences. Jochem is twelve and discovers that his best friend is suddenly no longer his friend. And while father does his awkward best to keep up appearances, seven year old Jasmijn is the only one who goes up to Grandpa and dares to ask him what it’s really like to die. The days are difficult, disturbing and sad until Grandpa’s last night when fireworks light up the sky and everyone feels more at ease.
