Synopsis:
Switzerland, 1955. The young orphan Max is sent as a foster child and contracted to work for the Bösiger family who lives on a farm. But instead of finding love, his foster parents treat him like a work animal, and their son Jakob is jealous of Max and enjoys degrading him. The only solace for Max is his accordion, which he plays with remarkable dexterity. When a new teacher from the city recognizes his talent for music, Max gets the chance to perform in front of the entire community. However, Max’s life at farm only gets worse. Max finds a new solace in his friendship with Berteli, a young girl fatherless, a foster child contracted to the Bösigers. Max and Berteli dream about going to Argentina, a dream land of meat and accordions. But tragedy strikes at the Bösiger farm. Max manages to escape and sets out to turn his dream of Argentina into reality, armed only with his accordion.
